Samhain Sonnet

Samhain
Bonfires dance on the black and green hillsides,
Drums pulse together as burning hearts pound,
A ritual as old as the moon and the tides
Call pagans to move to the ancient sound.
Figures bend, twirl and leap in the shadows,
The green man holds up the holly bush high,
Circles of light that shine in the meadows
Welcome the new as the old passes by.
The echoes of the ancient ones shudder,
The wind is full of their voices tonight,
It whispers the name, “Hecate dark mother, ”
Who sanctions and blesses the primal rite.
At once the past and the future are wed
What is now living is born from the dead.
