Death's Naiad

by Grainne Maitland
 Age Group: Adult

As I wandered 'cross the moors one night I lost myself in thought and hap'd upon a river deep and wide that I knew not.
Amongst the reeds and brambles on the banks of that strange place there skipped and played a child small with near-unnatural grace.
Her smile was bright and her voice was clear as she sang for music's sake and in her hand - a nosegay formed with blossoms of Heavenly make.
"Little maid, " said I, "with thy posy in hand, whither grow such blooms?"
"'Twixt bells and chimes and nursery rhymes, 'mongst thralling Faerie tunes."
"Little maid, " asked I, "by the dark water's edge, how came thee by such flow'rs?"
"I' the wood I played and came upon the magic Faerie bow'r."
"Little maid, " I pled, "with the moon in thine eye, wilt thou lead me to this place?"
"Alas, I fear my mem'ry fails - the path I cannot trace."
"Little maid, " I cried, "by the glistening falls, might I find it on mine own?"
"Though far ye look and wide ye seek, that grove ye'll ne'er know."
"Little maid, " asked I, "with thy smile so sharp, pray tell, why say you this?"
"Much we see and much we know who have felt the Faerie kiss."
"Little maid, " said I, "by the River Styx, what means thy cryptic verse?"
"I have seen what you may not and for it I am cursed.
Bound am I to capture all who wander this fey heath
And carry them with trembling hand 'cross river's pull - to Death!"
O, how I struggled and how I ran but always she was there, with eyes of ice and marble skin and garlands in her hair.
Then came the time - I finally fell, and, weary to the soul, I turned and sighed and whispered softly, "Come, and let us go."
She took my hand without a word and onward did we sail on ferry black and ghostly through the deadly river's wail.
In gloomy mists I stood alone on Death's deserted shore and ne'er again saw I the child from yonder lonely moor.
Soon did I find beyond the haze a forest vast and fair, and ever since, and evermore, I gaily wander here.
For ne'er again shall I see the child or yonder lonely moor.
Author's Notes: This came to me in the middle of the night in about mid-June or early July.
It was almost like someone else was writing it. The verses just wrote themselves on the paper.
