Druewiccanae

©26 July 1991 by Suzy Jacobson

On Thursday, I sat
Beneath an Oak Tree
And remembered my Fathers.
Greatly revered,
They found pathways to
Wisdom now lost to Antiquity

If I sing to them their own song,
Will they teach me
To speak in their tongues?
Or lay me on slabs
In stone circles, and
Grant me new life?

I am but a sprout
On this ancient tree,
There is mistletoe
In my hair, and
Rune-Words burning
Bright before my eyes.
*
On Monday, I walked
Along the shore
And recalled my Mothers.
Greatly loved,
They lit fires to healing places now
Buried deep beneath time’s wayward sands

If I say to them, TEACH ME:
Will they hold me in their martyred arms
And sing lullabyes of secrets locked
In catacombs of fear and Inquisition?
Or brush the wisps of hair from my eyes,
And say, “Stand: Come, walk upon the
Water, for you are Free?”

I pass through doors
Like mirrors cracked,
And there is soil
Upon my hands
And blood
Upon my thighs.
*
I seek the ways of those who know
Their paths are covered in brambles:
And shards of glass and hot embers
Leave my feet ravaged along the way.
The pain of my learning will leave me
Strong, and my blood shall lead the way
For those who wish to know
Where I have gone.

Author's Notes: I wrote this poem as I pondered the meaning of many things along my path. I considered my connection to the Old Gods as being perhaps both spiritual and a heritage. I considered the meaning of the Ancient Ones and those who honored them in the great stone circles in times past. I thought of the women who had gone before me along this path in life; the cycles of birth and of death and of rebirth. The path is not easy for any of us - either spiritually or mundane. We struggle to discover who and why we are, and should we find ourselves, at the end, battered and bruised, bleeding a path behind, it is my hope that our sacrifices have been worthy enough to lead others to their own self knowledge.
