Childhood Wish

What misguided fools we mortals be.
Cowering on the edge of reason, hope forgotten in our lethargy.
Too and fro we drive, desperately longing to feel alive.
Wisps of the person we used to be, screaming behind closed eyes.
Watching as hope and individuality are crushed in the eyes of our children.
Wondering where their mother is as she struggles through a labyrinth of abusive men.
Anger on their up turned faces, hiding a plethora of tears begging to break the surface;
Silently they cry themselves to sleep, desperate not to gasp.
Hopelessly trapped in the clutches of hypocrisy’s frozen grasp.
No one should go through their life afraid to breathe,
clinging to each shadow, trying not to be seen.
I’ve lived this way, haunted by my inability to have a voice.
Ruled by my Mother! Never given a choice!
Absorbed by fathomless guilt that never belonged to me…
betrayed by my Father’s desperate flight to be free.
Memories like shattered star dust blanket my weeping form
I have only to raise my head to release the storm.
Returning to a place where there was no hope of rescue.
Trapped in the realization there was nothing I could do.
Like the beginning life of a new seedling.
I let hope carry me away, on its wing.
Somewhere that I can be loved, and love in turn.
Not bound at the stake, about to be burned.
