The Grotto of Pan, book 2, canto 3

BOOK TWO
Canto 3.
The Desert Lord Zeos from his far mountain
surveyed the incalculable damage
the Impostor Jehovah did to His land -
the Colorado River, like the Nile,
damned. At the source atop the highest Peak
he saw to the east desert-like prairies
of Kansas, Dakota, New Mexico
origins, ancestors, so Libyan
he wept and waited for his brother Pan
to bring to him with Hades darkening
comparisons turning over the mind;
counterpoise swaying, wavering, in All
down to the first trickling rivulets
melting in the snowbanks light at his feet.
He sat and breathed on the grey granite spires
in the ethereal altitude thin
thoughts where blackest gods dwelt in thunderstorms:
and he was lighter than the brightest sun.
Author's Notes: "GOD" - by which I mean all the gods and goddesses - is here at the Source of THE River to those of us in the amerikan West, the Colorado River, on top of Long's Peak in Colorado (which I climbed 3 times as a kid in the 1950s, and I still consider Sacred like Olympos) .
