So Close But So Far

by Maia
 Age Group: Teen

Back in the very beginning when we lived in the same small town I didn't always acknowledge that you were around You were so quiet, dark, distanced from nearly everyone else
Soon after I came to the secluded town at school, at lunch, I'd see you standing around I started to watch you from a distance Such beauty, such grace, but still harboring much strength
You'd occasionally notice me a subtle smile would appear on your face the way you'd look at me in the corner of your eye I'd just turn away and pretend it was a mistake...
The first year was nearly over you wouldn't be there the next We talked a bit in the middle but stopped for nearly the rest
Even then, we still had a connection It was that way ever since my eyes set in your direction
The last days of the year finally arrived the event that was about to bring us together again at its rise The event itself is of no important detail it seems surprising since it caused our love to prevail
After the happening we still didn't talk he'd sit on the auditorium ledge away from the lunch benches near the sidewalk after class I'd see him sitting there Listening to music his long beautiful brown hair waving in the wind everyday, I'd climb up on the ledge and sit near him He'd acknowledge me with a smile and that would be the end The bell would ring, and we'd head back to class again
The last day I'd see him that year was a rainy one We were standing near the lunchroom sheltered from the rain watching it fall, as my heart fell with it the bell rang and my heart turned to lead suddenly the air around me felt so dead Then he hugged me long and tight he told me it will probably be the last time the last time we will get to hug for a while
We headed our separate ways off to class, in the rain and I wondered will I ever get to see him again?...
