Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Poem

I. Yesterday
I was from hot concrete under blue skies
From ratty yellow slats and a forest of milkweeds
I was from dark closets and a mother's kiss that never came
From “Holy Water” sung beneath phoenix skies
The oldest daughter and biggest sister – blessed miracle and protective role model
From “Be quiet for God's sake!” to “Stop fidgeting and sit down before I tie you to the chair.”
II. Today
I am a dormant volcano, silent and waiting
For an explosion to wake my dreams
A vibrant sky over a world in war
A girl stuck in time
I am a Great Oak – I stand taller than before
I am the color purple and blue of a falling sky
The mighty roar and purr in the Sahara
I am a thunderstorm with lightning bolts, waiting to strike
III. Tomorrow
I want to be a yellow Corvette, racing for another world
A lioness – strong and graceful
I want to be cobalt – sure and true
A lily daring to love
Or a diamond – calm and indestructible
I want to be an ancient ruin – standing against time
A strong mustang galloping through the wind and rain
I want to be the Phoenix with vibrant wings to take me to the sun.
