Companion

by Manu's Wolf
 Age Group: Adult

I used to have a dog for nearly everyday One to romp with, ruff-house, and play But all of my dogs had been taken away Death has a tendency to work that way
So dog-less I was for the very first time No fuzzy face to pet and call mine No reassuring eyes to tell me “I’m fine” Until fate turned around, deciding to be kind
Off to the shelter with parents in hand I was going to get a dog, I knew it was grand We went to a shelter that was completely jammed Every dog had a look like it had been damned
So looking for a companion, I started my search Every K9 praying as if they were in church Hoping I would pick them, it almost made me lurch To look at their expressions, all stiff like birch
Until two eyes caught my attention like gold They looked so pitiful and so very cold So I asked the manger if that dog I could hold He turned to face me, his answer he told
“Sure, you may see her” he led me to the cage The dog was sitting there with very little age I was sure she would like to go out and smell sage To go for walks and do tricks for me as if on stage
I turned to my mother with a finger pointing out “This one!” I stated in nearly a shout I knew if I didn’t have her, I surely would pout My mom looked at the dog and there was simply no doubt
“We’ll take her” said my father, gesturing to beast For moment I thought the beating of my heart had ceased I was quite happy… to say the least And the manager’s lips in a smile had creased
He filled out the paperwork quickly with a label We took the dog home and I sat at the table Wondering if this was real, or if I was in a fable And what to all my new found dog… I know… how bout Hazel?
Author's Notes: This poem is dedicated to my dog Hazel and to the animal shelters all over the U.S that work as hard as they can to help lost or abandoned dogs find new homes.
