Winter Day Musings:

by Gwydion Ap Alder

Age Group: Adult

As I make my way to work early, the morning’s grey snowy clouds hang low in the sky and cloak all sign of human habitation from my view. I can almost imagine that I am living in the ancient primordial past, in a time before mankind had stamped its sprawling, garish, imprimatur upon this landscape.

If I consciously ignore the paved road I am traveling on and the warm vehicle I pilot, I can feel a connection to and a deep empathy for my ancestors, those that faced cold, inhospitable and unpredictable weather with little more than stone tools, fire, and animal skins. As I imagine myself striding across a frozen landscape dusted with new fallen snow I can feel the bite of the Ice Age wind as it rocks and buffets me from many sides. I imagine seeking with all my focus and intent for any game that will promise food and life to my family in these cold and harsh times.

It occurs to me as I gaze out on the land and lose myself in vivid imagining of times long past that we, modern man, have things easy …comfy and cozy. Warm homes, plentiful food, hygienic practices that prevent illness, advanced medicine, a high culture focused on gratification of all of our needs …. well, most of them. For in our clever manipulation of our environment our industrious striving to build a world that surrounds us with comfort, we have sacrificed something very precious, something central to the blessing that is being alive, being HUMAN.

When we lived in small to mid-sized hunter-gatherer bands we inter-connected one to the other and shared the triumphs and tragedies encountered while walking upon this world. In this present self-styled “modern” world, I’ve spent many years living in neighborhoods never knowing the names of or really anything of import about those humans that dwelt in the homes immediately adjacent to mine. How very sad. With technology, I am able now to reach out and communicate via e-mail, skype, and text with people from all across the world yet even with this amazing and marvelous, near magickal ability, I don’t really know any of these people, I simply have a middling familiarity with their masks and face-book persona’s.

In ancient times people worked towards the well-being of their neighbors because without community and group effort all could perish in hard times. Nowadays we make heart-felt gestures of support for those amongst us that are needful but we do not (for the most part) make their welfare and reintegration to wholeness within our society a priority.

We have gained so much with our technology but along with this rapid gain we’ve also lost meaningful connection, we have discarded as superfluous that nearly indefinable soul and spirit bond that linked us so closely one to the other. We live now, well fed, warm, safely wrapped within our homes complete with environmental heating, cooling, and plumbing but we so often find ourselves un-comfortable for we live spiritually and emotionally wounded and deeply LOST.

Mental health dysfunctions are epidemic, drug use, suicides and crime rates climb higher as we struggle to find solutions to society’s many problems. Unable or unwilling to deal with the core issue our governments craft and issue edict after edict directing people how they must act under artificial restraints known as “The Laws”. These man-made rules have little effect due in major part to the deeper problem – that problem being Mankind’s heart disconnect from his fellow man and from Nature. ………… Solutions? …Perhaps , …………….

SLOW down… Breathe… Take time to be within yourself and reflect…Turn off your Cell
Shut down your computer screen… Turn off the lights and sit on the porch or under a tree.
Breathe in Nature’s sweet healing exhalations…. Find the silence that dwells within.
Hum a tune, play a musical instrument, sing, craft something, pray, meditate, BE..!
Mercilessly give yourself space for Alone-Time, Take TIME and use it to SEEK Your heart!
Connection comes when we are in tune with our inner self, when we Know and Love Our Self.
Reach out with your senses when in Nature, feel the energies that are moving about you.
Realize that you are part of everything; for You are the Universe in Ecstatic Motion,
You are Love made Manifest..!!! Blessed Be….!!! ) O ( Gwydion ) O (
