Adam's Lust

by Stifyn Emrys
 Age Group: Adult

Round and round the pole of May They dance in August’s warm decay The flies that flit and buzz and bite Rejoicing in the tragic plight
Of revelers from Beltanes past Whose vacant eyes are now downcast How came the lady and the lord To flee this place they once adored? To hasten with the ferryman Across that stream no bridge can span Two coins for the eyeless worms Beneath the barrow, ’twixt the berms …
That guard the Realm of Camelot That lofty dream brought down to naught By Zeus or Baal or Jupiter By Set or Typhon, ancient cur
That god whose ego spans the skies, Were we to psychoanalyze Perhaps we’d dare admit for once The folly of his arrogance
In whose own image we were cast By our own choice, from first to last Our aspirations given form Amidst the rash and heedless storm
That dealt to Job a fate unjust That taunted man with his own lust That baited Adam, turned on Eve Was it the serpent which deceived?
Or was it truly our own mind? Forever naked, ever blind We wander exiled o’er the land Forgotten birthright still in hand
Now wisdom cries out in the streets A harlot that we’re sure to meet But one we never recognize Or dare to look straight in her eyes
We speak so bold but question not We ravish her, then leave to rot The beauty that we never knew That innocence forever true
And so we’ll dance as ghosts one day Around the pole that first of May Our fallen mother ne’er to rise Beneath the soot of veiled skies
Where now are we, the proud and vain? So slow to see, so quick to blame Our childish god has run away And we have nowhere left to play
The filthy flies our only heirs To filthy lies and petty cares Remembering what might have been When time was young and Earth was green
