the greys
by darkling

the greys
cinnamon
wrinkled paper skin, dead leaf dry
(don't look at the eyes!)
their black depths take you willingly
to places you do not wish to go
darkness
many hands upon you
they could be the hands of children
but they are not right
everything is wrong
paralysis
terror blossoms blinding white
cold as a glacier
a familiar terror
a sweet terror
dimness
round and cluttered
so many busy little feet
and whispers
dry as dead bamboo
terror
the flash fades
(don't look at the eyes!)
but the after-image burns
forever and deep
some mornings you are afraid
and don't know why
some mornings you forget a strange dream
before you remember
the eyes of owls, the leaves, the cinnamon
