River of Scented Souls

by Angeleternyti
 Age Group: Adult

In front of me lies this wonder The river of scented souls It is so dark out, not a trace of light The moon has died and gone stale Yet this channel is so bright Illuminated it is, but I don't know how
I step into the running water Pressed against jagged rocks Coarse sand But all I feel is smoothness and ease Since pain no longer exists
I walk down the river a few paces And now stands in front of me A woman, no older than thirty Her hair, silver, filled with wild flowers Her body, frail yet elegant She opens her mouth and speaks "You are in love, aren't you?" Her glittering eyes look into my own And she smiles, nodding "Yes, you are. Your eyes speak of truth." And in a flash, she disappears
A few more paces down, an obese man stands He turns aorund and looks at me His face, hideous, full of scars and gore Maggots swimming, pus oozing Yet I don't recoil in fear or spite He notices and smiles "You are in love, aren't you?" His dark forboding eyes flare "You are since you haven't looked away Or made a face of disgust For you can see the beauty In things no longer beautiful." And in a flash, he disappears
Yet a few more paces down I see a child weeping His tears dripping into the river Each tear, a ripple As it hits the water He looks up at me and wipes his eyes "You are in love, aren't you?" His sad drooping eyes look upon me "What does it feel like to be in love? How will I know I'm in it?" I smile at his innocence And bend down To touch his forehead But before I do, he disappears In a blinding flash
An elderly woman sits On the bank of the river A few paces down from where I was Her sore feet, wallowing, In cool running water Her face smothered in wrinkles Lines of age and wisdom She smiles brightly and waves her arms Her bones, brittle, living a life that's too long "You are in love, aren't you?" She smiles again, Exposing her aged, yellow teeth "What will you do when that love dies?"
I rest my head down, thinking of the thought My being filled with dread Bitterness I hear the sounds of maggots Eating their way through me The same ones consuming that man's face "There, there, my sweet" She continues to smile "It will only die if you let it."
I look up and see her disappear In a blinding flash Unable to say "thank you"
And in the far distance, stands a lone person A man I slowly walk up to He sees me and winks My lover stood there, so filled with hope And desire My eyes soften, my body grows weak My heart pounds away And tingles kiss my body "You are in love with me, aren't you?" he asks. "I am, " I spoke the first time He grins and scratches his head "We are in the river of scented souls"
