Damsel in Distress*

I’ve been the damsel in distress.
Locked away, without power,
Without light, in a tall tower.
I’ve bit the poison apple
Believing it’s blood red lies,
It’s all lies in my head.
I played with the needles,
Tried to weave silver from straw
With promises of flesh and bone,
Heart and hand.
I’ve been the damsel in distress.
And now I can hold my own.
I won’t be the fairy tale.
I won’t wait for you to rescue me.
My heart is not for sale,
And my wrists no longer bleed.
Knights on horses,
Dragons, serpents, dreams.
Give me something real.
So sick of goddamn poetry.
No ballads, no sonnets,
Words without worth.
Intrigues and secrets,
Hide and go seek,
I’ve been the damsel in distress.
I won’t be a damsel in distress.
Not anymore.
