The Last Mortal Standing

The Last Mortal Standing
(i am the one)
I am the one
I remember how it started
How the visions came
How I begged the God I did not believe in
To let me forget
Let me join the timid herd
Let me lay upon the land
And
Trample anything between me
And that gold star water hole
(for perfect attendance)
I did not know perfection!
In this desert of my creation
Where the party starts on Friday night
I hunt crowded rooms of chaos
Steel string senses strung tight
I am both invisible and overwhelming
Slave, master and creator
I am the Breath
I am the Breathing
I am the Night that walks
And you can never know me
"What's that star you wear about?"
The redhead asks
Her black fingernails reach
For the Pent I wear
On leather around my neck
I move back
So slight she can't see
Only feel it
"It protects me from creatures of the night"
I say
I catch her hand in flight
The way a Raptor takes a Sparrow
The moment of contact stretches eternal
"Not from this one"
Her smile is wicked
Eternity flips
Suddenly it is my hand captured
And the world smells like burning leaves
Yes, yes, yes sizzles in my head
Oh, it rings like the bell of a cathedral
Rambling in those dark landscapes
Where it is forever Autumn
Where I am the last mortal standing
And all Dionysius can do is weep
