The Chthonic Pulse

by Sgian Dubh

Age Group: Adult

Deep in the wild boscage of the world,
A world of wet wind winding through the weald,
A sound, smoothly seething out from the heart
Of the beast beats out its fearful cadence
Slow and soft it starts its pitter-pat
Simmering, smoldering, falling into rhythm
The heartbeat of the forest beating drums
BOM BOM it drums, and calls again BOM BOM.
The misty air is hot with the wavering sound
And the smell of dirt and wood, of towering pines,
Of sturdy oak and enigmatic beech
The sounding thrum pervades the labyrinth
Of woody walls of timber and of brush,
The timber’s tinny timbre keeping time
To the chthonic pulse of some dark king,
A relic of a long forgotten past.
Daedelic Minotaur who knows the ways—
The winding ways and paths unlearnable:
Through death and back, through time interminable.
The hunter, hunted, haunted haunter, how,
O how came you to be forgotten so?
The noble beast of stately form and air
Whose horns call louder than the trumpet’s flair
And to our very hearts that beat with yours:
The heart o’the forest, pounding primal roars;
Screams out the loss of us and us of thee
Our grim and graceful patron, fell and free.
Come, leave your labyrinth and walk with me
Rise, swell, and roar, and greet the raging sea.
Your lady screams, your loyal ones implore,
O mighty hunter king, protect once more.
Hear now her cry and spring your deadly spear;
Come forth and fly, fleet footed, full of fear.
Fell, fiery faun, fall fearsome on foul foes!
Reclaim your dwindling realm, O Cernunnos!
With usurped throne and violated queen,
Conceiving in conceit—oh blot obscene—
Advantage and a moral appanage,
Dream duty to despoil and encage.
Take up the ram-horned snake and torque of old
And rise against these tyrant traitors bold,
For they betray their life force in the earth
And leave your queen to die who gave them birth.
Awaken king and husband of the world
And with you full force bared, banner unfurled,
Drum out your heart, but beat a warlike tune,
Impress them to kneel fore the sun and moon.
