The Witch and the Patriarch

by DD Dionysus

Age Group: Adult

The Witch and the Patriarch

Diana Queen of Witches all
In sorrow saw the magick fall.
A Patriarch had come to rage
And write his scripture on a page.

The Patriarch claimed he had the law
That came from a God we never saw.
Women were denied his 'holy spirit'
And soon they learned they had to fear it.

Diana’s magick brewed a plan
To counteract this sinister man.
"Aradia, my daughter, listen my dear,
Go teach the mortals what they must hear."

Aradia realized the source of her power,
As Diana's divinity grew stronger each hour.
Drawing on magick she raised from the earth
The very same energy that gives life to birth.

Connecting together the magickal elements
The energies of life are the secret ingredients.
Unlimited enchantment rewards with great pleasure.
Continue to practice and master this treasure.

The Patriarch’s face grew somber and stern
And asked, “When will you wicked women learn?
My book says a witch must be tortured and burned.
And much more is taught that you must not have learned.”

Aradia smiled when the Patriarch was done.
“No wonder you’re grouchy and never have fun.
You’ve been very wicked and you’ve nowhere to run.
But we shall be dancing by the warmth of the sun.”

She scared him with magick just to let him know,
And the Patriarch realized it was time he must go.
Diana was calling, so Aradia went home,
But promised the mortals she'd come back to roam.

Aradia returned at the full of the Moon,
With magickal tools, and Tarot and Rune.
The Wand in the Chalice, the Coin with the Blade,
Being free of all malice and never afraid.

And once every month when the Moon has grown full,
My mother, Diana, will teach you her will.
Teaching these secrets that others can't see,
Being naked in rites shall be proof you are free.

Energies build as the magick grows stronger,
Aradia's gifts cannot last too much longer.
Ecstatic enchantment, play the magickal game,
And finally the feast for the witches who came.

Aradia was blessed to bestow unto those
Who were given rewards to the witches she chose.
Granting enchantments for many long hours,
To witches shown worthy of favors and powers.

Author's Notes: I composed this poem on Friday, March 20, 2009 for the Vernal Equinox and the advent of Spring, in tribute to our Mother Goddess, the giver of all energy, and whose true magick is the very power of life itself. She wants us to connect with her, and with each other, by that very same power and magick which expands exponentially.

I felt inspired to take the liberty of adapting some of the tale of Diana and Aradia from the prose and poetry of ARADIA by Charles Leland and mysterious Maddalena, the Strega witch who is allegedly said to have provided much information about her tradition to Leland in great detail.

The patriarch alludes to a patriarch of scripture who fathered three major religions based on inflexible scripture and which have generally treated women, once the revered Goddesses, as secondary beings. These male-dominated patriarchal religions continue to wage war continuously against each other and anyone else who refuses to convert and submit to their self-claimed authority. The patriarch represents collectively the oppressors Aradia mentioned. If not for some governmental intervention in more modern times we might still be forced to remain in the dark ages of crusades, inquisitions, horrifying irrational witch hunts, and a holocaust of church-sponsored child abuse. Never turn your back. Many patriarchs still want to hunt.
