ghosts of water rising on black asphalt -
iridescent memories of coolness
amid the tar burn stretching behind and ahead,
a languid slithering creature of distance and day's heat
breathing solid dust,
red brick baked too long in the endless sun
a world of seeming emptiness -
plants with no substance or color
crouching low with gnarled limbs,
their dry fingers gouging pale yellowed dust from the earth,
mirage giants sleeping in the distance
creased paper worn smooth by time and pale by sun
