Spirit Offerings...

by Ed Novem Grey
 Age Group: Adult

Many of the people who put out bird feeders enjoy watching the birds that come to feed at the feeder. They watch their habits, food preferences; perhaps they may even keep a notebook of their favorites, or at least a field identification guide handy. Many will refill the feeder, especially during inclement times, snow or drought stalking the land.
The feeding must be in a way precise, the feeder can only hold so much at a time, care must be taken to reduce moisture to avoid mold, beetles and undesirables can destroy the feed, the feeder must not reach empty. Gardens benefit as well.
We do not feed the birds what WE would desire ourselves, through observation, we see what the birds want, which birds like which. You can draw specific species of birds to frequent your yard, although an odd one may show up from time to time. Certain types can become territorial as well. Then there are the squirrels which steal the food and the cats which steal “those who feed” to deal with.
Hummingbirds have even been shown to be so attentive, that they will keep time schedules as to when feeding times are.
…and never forget the large artifice that goes behind the growing, harvesting, transporting, buying with symbols, and filling of the feeders at the proper time. Just a quick schematic of the interrelationships looks like strange sigils on the paper. Why even begin to integrate suet or nectar formulas until seeds can be understood and produced?
Quite a relationship. Now then, on to cats and dogs and when they sleep together…
