Primitive Rhythms

by Moontide Rain

[WVox Sponsor]

Age Group: Adult

Tramping over Mariposa Grove’s spongy
black soil beneath our new stiff boots,
heavy coats and gloves repelling sharp
November air awaiting snowfall,
our words puffs of vapor floating past
mammoth trunks of auburn and copper.

Amoebas of snow scatter over hillocks,
Junco and squirrel skitter in the underbrush
foraging for worm and seed, preparing
for winter’s desolate rest preceding
Spring’s abundant birthing of seed
and sparrow, fawn and flower.

A hidden path guarded by a granite sentry
appears, pine-green moss creeping up
boulder’s spine, shaded by boughs of fir.
Beyond, a foyer of soft light, grave quiet,
bordered by a line of trees now broken
by a path, and there we see, The Stag.

Full-pointed antlers and muscled neck
forged in battle for dominance and doe.
Onyx eyes watch and warn no trespass
while his harem moves beyond our feeble,
harmless reach and in that moment visions
form of deities and hero quests.

On this threshold between our worlds
hearts beat primitive rhythms, ears pound
with thundering hooves running wild
through forest and meadow. Cernunnos,
the Horned God, Lord of the Woods,
protector of land and nature.

Sacred fires burn, chanting voices call
to spirits of earth, water, and constellation,
dancers whirling dervish to honor
this god of healthy crops and cattle,
while lover’s plant life in empty wombs,
and mothers suckle their children.

Stepping back, we bow our heads
in reverence for this ancient symbol,
protector of our primal ancestors
and we say a prayer for the old gods
long abandoned to mythic history.
