The Coyotes Laugh
Age Group: Adult
I sit up under a dome
Of sharp black crystal
Scattershot with blue and white diamond
I stand, rubbing gummy eyes
Draw a deep breath
Hold it a second
Then exhale a cloud of mist
Which stays hanging about my face
A fuzzy glow stretches across the night
Straddling the gap
Between yesterday and tomorrow
A bridge between horizons
I try to remember the last time
I felt this simple pleasure
At the sight of the Milky Way
It has been too long
For an instant my heart swells
And then I am sorrowed
For I have no one to share this moment with
Far off in the night
I hear a coyote chuckle
Then a breathless whisper floats by my ear
"Why not share it with yourself, Two Legs?"
For a moment believing in disembodied voices
As my sorrow sloughs away
Leaving me standing
In fear of my loneliness
In fear of the solitude I once clung to so dearly
In fear of my death
Frightened of dying alone
I shiver and my stomach rolls like liquid
In some ancient response
There is a buzzing in my head
Suddenly the whisper dances back
Just out of reach
"Two Legs, " it says
"You are part diamond and part darkness,
You are a part of all you see,
All you experience
How can such a one ever be alone?
How can a part of something so vast ever die?"
The tingly buzzing slips away
I am left standing
Eyes squinted shut and my mouth hanging open
Somewhere off to the north
Far across this darkened valley
Nestled in the arms of the night
The coyotes begin to laugh
