Darklings

I am not one
Your grandmother warned you about
For some things
There are no warnings
For others
No alarm can be heard
Until it is too late
You and I
Know this ravenous silence
For we are the hunger incarnate
I have seen you hunting
The darkening day
The quiet, catlike
Certainty of your stalk
The kittenish lethality
The play the Prey cannot escape
Until, numb with exhaustion
They lie shuddering at your feet
Before slipping over so sweet
Into that long dark moment
Your interest has wandered long before
There is no way to prepare
For meetings of beings
Like us
Darklings
Who remember how the stars shone
And wish the lines of street lights
Blink out
One by one by one
We await the hour of the Failing Light
We Children of Twilight
Mother the Night
Creatures of Dark Radiance
That may never run from
Only toward
The beginnings that end us
And the endings that begin
