Only The Burden

Walk with me in the night
To my shadowlands behind daylight
And I will show you Orion
And the Seven Sisters
Polaris and the Great Bear
If the time of year is right
And we look slightly north of due east
I will point out a dim star
Reddish in the haze
Fading in and out
Just above the horizon
If I feel you will hear
I might tell you the story
Of my surrender
To that weak light
The ransoming of my heart
By that distant star
The fall to Earth
And the vast vacancy
That is me
Empty. Irresistable. Ravenous
Pulling me within myself
Until nothing of me remains
Except the emptiness
Perhaps then you will understand
How the few nights each year
Of that far sun's visibility
Have become precious
Holy to me
For at no other time
Can I come any closer to the light
That surrounds, that washes
I can come no closer
To the light that holds my heart
There are jewels
Too rare and beautiful
To ever be owned
The only gems that some ever know
I did not claim the dark diamonds
That I pressed into your palm
All I ever owned of them
Was the burden
And I am free!
Look. I am smoke
I am smoke between the shadows
I am dark behind daylight
