Dams

I build walls around myself
Walls of words, of rock, of will
I have seen ragged stone lines
Gasp into life as I bled metaphor
Molting once again in monolithic isolation
Inside hazy valleys
I can never leave
Behind walls
I can never stop building
I am king beneath the mountain
Where brittle fingers of quartz
Stretch
Beg to touch, to grip the distance
The walls grow higher
Or perhaps I grow smaller
Stripping away the skin of old
Shedding parts of a life
That was always too big
Boundaries to borders
Barriers to walls
Walls stretching, expanding
Running high across the flat
To mountain north and mountain south
Boundaries, borders, barriers, walls
. . . Dams . . .
Re-born
Pink and naked
Finally the tears come
And with them one last wish . . .
. . . that this time
I stay afloat long enough
To reach the top
