Bird

by Freyja's Valkyrie
 Age Group: Adult

Bird
Birds freeze on canvas and wood. They morph from form to form, shifting shapes as carefully as feathers tilt, moved by muscular contraction of pinions.
Long fingerbones reach out to pray. The Bird-head Goddess, so old her name is forgotten by the ancient Gods who gave birth to our days. Thin memory with a sepia tinge
drawn with blood on walls of a cave, a huddled womb. She gives birth to memory and Gods, stories, thought and dreams. Fertile now, she gestates, almost seen.
The shining egg, gauze-covered, washed with every hue in nature, pregnant with hope. We meet ourselves again, cloaked in feathers, jeweled eyes flash in the resonance.
Bird song shifts, bends into the collective, the soul of all humanity. Can you hear Her? The Bird-head Goddess calls us. Her neck slims, legs stretch into a crane-dance, tapping in code.
Can you see Her? She ruffles on ledges, flits past the corners of eyes, frozen to a page, an Audubon plate in a book Loons cry on a midnight lake.
She is the voice who calls to us from a flock of migrating geese building the hunger, the beautiful sadness longing for a home we never really knew.
Author's Notes: The John Deaux art gallery in Pueblo, Colorado is filled with many images of birds, different types of birds, doing different things: flying, walking, dancing. Some of the birds are interpretations of birds and I wondered what the artists may have thought. Maybe he or she was inspired to paint based upon some internal image of bird in the elemental sense. I thought of the pre-historic Bird-head Goddess and how She keeps reaching out to us.
