Breathing History

History lurks in old books
forgotten on dusty shelves
stacked like fuel against
long winters of lost memory.
Old children’s books capture
essence of myth & thought,
fluid honey drips & sticks
to mind, flavors ideas.
Scent of lost time
gels in the olfactory senses
wakes the still slumbering tales.
Color plates glow, lighting
a dim closet of the mind.
Yes, we have visited
there before, returning
in dreams. The collective
sigh. Awe shakes & wakes
reminds us of the past, glides
us into the orbit, the fanned
spanned time fluid as a shawl
drapes shelves, shoulders, us
from them, our ancestors
living history even now
Dancing to notes on dust motes
hammered out by the Gods
sliding against the imagined ear
guiding steps in the waltz,
polka, two-step, promenade
through stacks of years
centuries, millennia, piled
one on top of the other
on shelves, the dust shivers
into glittering motes, pirouetting
in pieces of sunlight that shatter
through glass, framed
by spaces of memory
bounced back, refracted from the past
Author's Notes: Saturday, 29 April 2006 in the Tumbleweed Book Store. I was very impressed by the look and feel of the bookstore. Was looking for books that either dealt with Beowulf or with Norse history. Found two books, but both were children’s books. One was a turn of the century book on famous stories for children, complete with wonderful color plates. One of the famous stories examined was Beowulf and so of course, both books found a new home with me.
