A Pack End

Running through the woods, I see
Flashes of white and grey
Around me. But I do not
fear them, for they are
my brothern, my family.
I run with them,
Beside them. My feet
Do not seem to touch
The ground as I lope around
Trees.
Newborns will come soon
And see what it is
That we howl for.
For pride, for joy,
For protection.
Pups howl with us,
Their untamed voices pierce
The night, the next leaders
And hunters born.
I've been here long, so have
My family. I am their leader.
I am the alpha. Those are
My pups howling.
The doe grazes calmly
In the meadow. But she
is not the one I hunt, with
Calf she is. There is an
Old leader, cast aside by his
Heard. We chase him down. He
Is fast but in the end
He accepts his
Fate and my family
Dines upon his old body.
A succesful hunt, this was.
My numbers grow thin.
My alpha has died, but
Not as the elk. A new
Hunter has come, taken
My family. Here I lay,
In pain, only wishing,
Praying, that I will
Be the last to go.
I watch from above
As my pack disappears.
Others are also gone
Now, too. Our numbers
Are thin, as are we. But
We will live on.
Never disappear for long.
Author's Notes: This poem is about the endangerment of wolves [and all creatures] and how human society is destroying everything. We've wandered off of our peaceful path.
