Recovered Memory

My weepy lids blink slowly,
Only to happen upon such
A rareity in my world. Her eyes-
They look into mine and don’t turn away.
The sparkling brown pools
Ripple from the movement within.
Children do not fear the eyes.
For theirs cannot help but to bear
Their souls’ expressive natures.
Still lifetimes old in the young body,
The soul remembers everything
That the young mind has not,
And it leaps to the eyes for recognition.
“Help me! This body does not know me!
I have experienced this sequence before!
Why must I do this again?”
I can see your soul, little girl.
In turn, I cannot help but
Offer mine in exchange.
I am hurt. I am sad. But I am too honored
By what I have seen.
I will not look away.
You are welcome to see me.
Find my broken soul and
Feast upon it. For this is who I am.
With pure, unaffected, unhindered
Warmth- her small, innocent arms
Have flung themselves around my legs
Without restraint or control.
Her head barely reaches my waist.
Curly brown hair... My hand rests
Upon her head without hesitation.
Her loving act lifts me into a
Bewildered grin. Although
I have not smiled for so long,
Nothing can compare to this feeling.
And it is fleeting, for she
Has already run away
To play with her sister.
I cannot stop watching them,
Two curly headed, brown-eyed girls-
They are barefooted-
Running in blessed circles.
Author's Notes: I battled severe depression for some years. I can recall many things about that time in my life, though I cannot recall the proper sequence of events.
I have been experiencing many spiritual changes of late. Along with them is the recovery of this memory. I do understand that it is a coping skill to forget certain events in life. What I don't understand is why this precious memory of all things was lost to me for over 10 years.
I am upset that is was gone for so long. I am even happier that it is back.
