People looked at me and saw a witch,
to see a strong woman in black made them uncomfortably twitch.
They asked if being a witch was the reason for the color I wore.
I said, "No one has ever asked me before."
Most assumed it was something all witches did,
and the explanation was a mysterious secret carefully hid.
They said, "Then what is the reason why?"
I looked them straight in the eye.
I then told them my story so they could see,
the reason why black has a special meaning for me.
It is the color of the dark void from which the Great Goddess gave birth,
to the universe and our mother we call the Earth.
It is the spectrum of the rainbow combined as one,
absorbing the life-giving power of the sun.
It is the color of the Goddess of the Moon at twilight,
her light enfolded within the deep velvet of night.
It is the color that was donned by women wise,
those who were the healers, herbalists and midwives.
It is the color of the cloaks my ancestors had worn,
spun from the wool of black sheep newly shorn.
It is the color in which the holy people have dressed,
and for which as a priestess, I too am likewise blessed.
It is an outer reflection of the wisdom and strength I carry inside,
and so I wear it with the greatest pride.
The next time you see this strong woman in black stride by,
remember there is a reason why my head is held high.
It is a reaffirmation of who I am,
And that is why I wear black.
Author's Notes: I wrote this a few years back, in honor of a good friend who taught me how positive - and powerful - the color black truly is.
