City Mandala

Before you, an eight-lane highway.
Behind you, in the parking lot, two kids in a hopped-up Acura
Doing Goddess knows what, the bass turned up so loud your chest vibrates.
Oh well, at least it drowns out the traffic.
On your left, the river, brown and sluggish,
spewing the by-products of civilization into the sea.
On your right, beyond a lone scraggly tree, the city.
You think the Romans invented cities, but you aren’t sure.
Maybe it was the Egyptians, or the Chinese.
You wonder what they would think of their invention now.
Above you, an airplane roars past,
Leaving a long white scar on the dingy sky.
But below you is the earth, the world, the mother,
This little patch of green that you have found,
With this scraggly tree.
You close your eyes and call those who will to witness your rite.
A squirrel, a pigeon, a cockroach, a rat,
The totem animals of this place,
They will eat the offering you leave.
The Acura kids lay a strip in the parking lot,
Shouting “Woo!” at you as they race past.
It’s easy to be a pagan in the woods,
With nature everywhere.
Not so easy in the city.
But carry on;
This is where Gaia needs you to be,
Where she has been “civilized” by people
Who think they know better.
