The Descending of Persephone

by Gaean Taeapharo
 Age Group: Adult

I’ll tell you a story Of centuries past Of a mother A God An Olympian pact And a Goddess so fair The God fell in love A passion frowned on By Olympus above
So he stole her away Into the night Out of our world Out of our sight Down to his realm To be his queen Voice unheard Sight unseen And Demeter raged at her loss “The Goddess of the Corn, he will not cross!” “I’ll plunge the world into a bitter snow.” “Let the word be spread on the wings of a crow”
So in the air On ivory wings The bird of white spoke of things Tremendous snows Pelting rain All because of Demeter’s pain But the people of Greece wanted a reason For why the sudden change in the season
The goddess refused to soothe their minds “I’m off to the Underworld to find, my stolen daughter of Henna fair.” “Let the Lord of the Dead beware.” “The wrath of a mother so angered and betrayed.” “On the Earth the Goddess Spring should have stayed” But down below near the River of Life Persephone took her role as Death’s wife A role at first she did not seek But after awhile, for about a week She found a tree bearing fruit Apples of life from the root She took a bite of the food so tasty After which she knew she was hasty For those who eat the fruit of Styx Never again must they mix With those of life on Gaea’s face The fate of those who have a taste And Demeter descended into the Land of the Dead Where she found Persephone had fed Herself with the food that would keep her below And the Goddess knew the Earth would no longer know The love and warmth of her daughter’s touch No flowers No trees Not as much As a new petal rose At the start of the Spring All because of the under world King So Hades and Demeter argued and fought Over Persephone’s fate they sought Counsel with the King of the Gods high So up they rose quick to fly To the halls of Olympus so high and white Amongst the pillars began the fight “She should be on Terra with me!” said the mother of Persephone “No, she is my wife!” Hades shouted for the life Of their marriage so sacred he planned to fight long But Zeus stopped him with a voice so strong, “She will be with the people of the Earth for the count of six” “Then, in the Autumn, she will descend to Styx! To be with thee, dear brother, As your wife, as your lover.” “And you, fair Goddess of the Corn. Do not fret, do not mourn!” “For the first season two, she shall flourish on the Earth with you!” “So all of you leave and start afresh!” “A bond of family you shall mesh!” So the Goddess and her daughter parted farewell “We shall meet again, this I shall swear to to you, mother dear. There will be love in my heart, do not fear.”
And the centuries have drifted away But story of the season will stay Within the books of the shadows wide This legend of the wheel resides
