The Choice

Age Group: Adult
Open or shut?
Do I share?
Will I be shunned,
Or do people even care?
To be shut -
Keep to my own
Blend in and respond right,
Become a clone
No hurt,
No stares
No shifting feet
Or vile glares
Yes, it will hurt
To bottle and deny
My true aspect
Will cause everything to die
To be open -
To feel right and free,
Proud of what and who
I could be
Yet, being open
Also has a cost:
Fingers will point and outcast
That which knowledge has lost
To be shut
Is to be unfulfilled
Yet, to be open
Is to be killed
To do one
Feels like death,
And the other is to be hated and despised
With every drawn breath
No matter the choice,
Plague will follow,
So I choose to be free
Instead of cold and hollow
My path has been decided:
A Witch I will be,
But out and exposed
For all to see
Yet, my head will not hang low
From the hate-filled ranting,
For Rhiannon
Will give me wings
Author's Notes: My openly gay English professor reminded me just how hard it is to live in a society opposed to anything different. This poem, a very poorly written one, is my reassertion of why I too remain open.
