The Secret

Deep within me
I have a secret,
Buried where no one can see
Or know its warmth
Behind locks and doors,
No one else knows
What secrets my heart
Keep enclose
The joy of its keeping
Is so clear;
Its light seeping
Through the seams
It shows in my eyes
And in my dreams,
But sometimes its knowledge
Is fantasy, it seems
My secret, so long kept,
The only image held on
When others were swept
Away with the discards
Too long has it haunted
My waking sleep
For seven long years
It has stayed in my keep
His face, still imprinted there,
As clear as I remember it;
It’s almost as if he is here,
Standing right before me
Perhaps it is not to be,
This secret and I
He has gone another way
With not a glance by
He has moved up and on
While I sit alone,
My love gone
And nothing for me but this secret
Sometimes, all we are left with
Is what may be,
Even if the dream is
Nowhere near reality
Perhaps then, in its own way,
The secret will fade
Or will someday
Come true for me
I cannot say one way or another,
But if my secret is never set free,
I only wish bright blessings
On the separate heart of me
