Nightly Stride

Moon-lit cloaked shadows have
Walked the path between mossy
Pillars of the forest, their
Slender arms reaching out to
Touch the dancing flicker
Of candle flame, caged
Within the bars of each lantern they hold.
No word is spoken;
The silence broken only by the snap and crunch of dead branches
Whose curved, claw-like fingers reach up to grasp passing ankles
Like the withered souls in Hades;
Yet, there is a peace
In the dark, a calm slumber of waking to sleep
And sleeping to wake again, beneath the sheltering trees.
Author's Notes: This, like most of my earlier works, is a non-traditional sonnet form, the 'traditional' forms being Petrarchan (or Italian) and Elizabethian (or Shakespearian) . This poem has a relatively consistent meter (isn't needed for any poem, but it makes it "flow" more) , a spot or two of onomatopoeia, a dash of allusion, and like usual, distinctive imagery. I don't know what compelled me to write this, other than the greatness of JRR Tolkien's (love that author) reference to the Elves and their journey to Valinor from Rivendell.
