To Our Persecutors

by AwenSpirit
 Age Group: Adult

Do you think that it's your mission Repeating the Inquisition With words of hate and fear? To claim to be a, "healer" "teacher" "minister" "preacher", And you say, "suffer not a Witch to live When your 10 Commandments State " thou shalt not kill" -- To, "love one another."
Was the mayhem you caused at Salem Not enough? Or the slaughter of millions By burning at the stake Because you could not take, Nor respect their beliefs -- All in the name of your god.
That we wear a Pentacle And say, "Blessed be", That we, Worship a God And Goddess And respect women more than You respect your congregation, That the Wiccan Rede states, "An harm ye none, do what thou will", You deem us evil.
Preacher, I'm done hearing your sermon That, I'm going to "burn in hell with satan" The way you talk, Sounds like you've been there! Yes! I am Pagan and proud Of who I am. But you?...
You spit out your hatred Faster than a sub-machine gun, And so, you call yourself "teacher"? -- You make me sick. Ghandi's words spoke the truth: "I like your Christ, but I do not like Your christians; they are so unlike Your Christ." You have nothing To be proud of; But all that I ask, Is that you COEXIST.
Author's Notes: This is my slam poem!! :) For those who do not know what the heck a slam poem is, slam poems LIVE in presentation and performance. Just reading it with no emotion would kill it. If I could post a video of me presenting this, I would. I presented it at my high school's annual "Wordfest", a festival of Poetry that lasts three days, and it was a BIG hit. And this was my first slam! Slams are not easy to do. They are better performed if they are memorized, so that the Poet can use his or her entire body to "move" with the slam. THAT, my friends, is what Poetry is all about; the self expression of one's emotions. Anyhow, when I was finished, the crowd's applause could probably be heard all around the school, and this is a school of roughly 3000 students. About 5 people from that crowd came up to the stand and thanked me for writing and presenting it. Even the other Poets I knew in my class, who wrote mostly slams, loved it - Megan was one of them; she is a master of slams and raps. Now, back to slams, ... slam poems have no specific structure, unlike villanelles, Italian and Elizabethian Sonnets, haikus, sestinas, etc. Slams have a strong flow of rhyme (typically end rhyme or near rhyme) and meter. Sometimes they have just one or the other, but usually both poetic techniques. As I said before, slams are pure emotion. They don't "live" on a page - they live to be performed. The way I crafted this slam was a little different than what people might expect. Despite the frequent punctuation - you'd think I'm E.E. Cummings reincarnated :) - the piece flows pretty well. The periods are the only major breaks, and I used them mostly at the end of each stanza in this slam. This piece is vivid with imagery, allusion, metaphor, end rhyme, mid-line rhyme (two rhyming words in a line) , and personal characterization. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did presenting it :) Blessed be times Three! /l\
