The Teacher

Our books are returned once more,
The mountain of knowledge
Imprinted upon layers of glacier sheets,
Pulsing to the flow in iambic pentameter
Of words dropped careless on a page,
Yet each breathes the exhaled emotion of
The Poet's voice; the voice that was
Nurtured under your guidance for a year,
And this day, we step forward on the road
You walked before us, and there's no telling
Where we'll be swept-off to - but worry not,
For this knowledge you bestowed
Unto us will often make thoughts
That lie too deep for tears.
Author's Notes: This is a non-traditional sonnet I wrote for my honors Poetry teacher, Ms.Casey, on the last day we seniors attended school (everyone else got out of school a few days later) . That day was kind of chaotic, but in Poetry class, we did an 'open-mike' session like we would always do on Fridays (which we called 'open-mike day') , where anyone could come up to the podium and present their Poetry or music. This was also the last period of the day, and it was a great way to end it ;) . I wrote this during the period while others were presenting their works, and I then presented it. It brought Ms. Casey to tears, and we embraced. I came in a day later and gave her a framed copy she could hang-up. And that was the last time I saw her until the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. She was more than a teacher - she was Mom; not just to her own kids, but to all of us ;) . She was also half hippy and had that wonderful spark in her personality :) . I remember when she took us to the Dodge Poetry Festival in Newark, NJ in 2011 and told us that one day, we could be presenting our works there ;) . Well, when I present there, I am definitely going to mention her, and 'ya never know - she might even be in the crowd :) .
