Culture Shock

There's no "gimmee, gimmee here",
no "*** you, out of my way!"
No homeless people botherin' you,
harrassing for hard earned pay.
There aren't people handing out flyers,
or standing in your path,
or shouting out obscenities,
of hateful world wide wrath.
There aren't streets filled with litter,
or people that line the streets,
with signs that say "help me please,
we'll work for small meal fees."
There aren't people who cuss you out,
or try to pick a fight,
this area, where I am at,
is quiet thru out the night.
There are no rude comments,
and or tons of racial slurs..
a lot of people's attitudes'
are nicer, which I prefer!
The people here respect you,
and they don't give it right away..
you have to earn your place here,
to help them even sway.
I think that I like people, more here,
than where I was raised before..
the others in my homestate were
becoming more like a chore!
You had to be on your guard more
you can never really trust,
the people in my homestate, they'll
turn you into dust!
And so, with this little poem,
I hope to say my peace, that
the culture shock was "all that"
but dealing with it was a beast!
When you are used to one way,
and one way all the time..
it can really make you think some
like"have I just lost my mind?!"
This is not what I've been used to
but, it was soo worth the wait.
I am just glad to be here, whether
it be luck or it, be "fate!"LOL!

I had been going thru a rather interesting process (even though I have now lived here almost three years now..I was still adjusting to the people and the differences out here...) this is sooo different from where I came from..
In Berkeley, Calif..there is a different feeling there..and NOT all of it is "fun" to have to deal with...
I think that I much prefer, at this writing..the way that people treat one another here..they are stand-offish at first..but, then as you earn their trust, and respect they are very warm towards you....and you have made some quality friendships.
In Berkeley, you could be a stranger there..and they would treat you like you were everybody else..and that is what draws people to living there..but, since I have grown up there...it has grown OVER me...like thick heavy vines of ivy..and annoying ivy at that!!The people there, as well as newer people can get treated like you are trash...over and over..I am sooo over that behavior...I don't like it at all!!That is just the way that it is there..there isn't any "earned respect"..and that is what is frustrating..
I just get really tired of the attitudes out there...I don't hate my homestate, or town..but, perhaps I just want to "get away" from the way that atmosphere for a while...ya know?
I think sometimes people honestly need a break..to get away from where they grew up...just to see a totally different perspective..or maybe that's just me! LOL!
