Winter Daydream?

The frozen trees loom stark and high,
bare branches reach up heavenward.
In supplication to the sky
they hope their prayers for warmth are heard.
I walk these silent woods alone,
my footsteps print the fallen snow.
Then from this path my thoughts are blown
to dream of days of long ago.
In my mind's eye I see a knight,
his armor flashes in the sun.
Astride a steed of purest white
he speaks of battles he has won.
"For love of you my maiden fair,
in hope your heart and hand I'll win
I've gone into the dragon's lair
and slain the beast that lurked within."
"With nothing but my sword and shield
I've conquered wicked foes with ease.
To me a thousand soldiers yield
and evil men fall to their knees."
"And yet the power I command
is gone when by your charms beguiled.
In asking for your lovely hand
I tremble like a little child."
The handsome knight dismounts his steed
and kneels before me on the ground.
"Oh maiden fair your love I need,
I ask in marriage we be bound.'
Just then a wind gust startles me,
my daydream flees from Winter's wrath.
'Tis not a brave young knight I see
but only snow upon the path.
I shiver at the icy blast,
pull tight my coat and turn to go.
When suddenly I stare aghast
at ghostly hoofprints in the snow.
Author's Notes: I wrote this several years ago on a particularly snowy day.
