East of Summermay

by Dayan
 Age Group: Adult

the western edges of the wood had been quiet for a long time no one had heard the flutter of wings or the outcry of the carrion birds at night there was always peace by day the hustle and bustle of the nearby farmfields died all sound away not a wind stirred, either, from the western woods. the summer was too quiet and the farmers were feeling the loneliness of the wood that haunted all their credulous minds and when harvest season came just before the dryness in the onslaught of the winter-months the forest remained as silent as before before the snows wild stories were told two miles up town where the travelers brought word back from the lakeland on the edge of the quiet western wood. the town of Summermay had seen an early spring, an early summer, the worse of winters had already come and no one knew why all this happened but on the eastern edges of their forest they heard fluttering wings, croaking birds that flew above, as if hunting some quite valuable prey the winter was most quiet, as the farmers did not venture through the heaven downed snows but when the thaw came forth and life erupted upon the earth blooming leaves and flowering fields two folk came fast from Summermay and told a story to dismay: the birds of leather black had come within the last days of the winter, croacking... poking, biting, clawing children dismembered in gruesome ways childbearing women's bellies torn wide open the town of Summermay lay in extreme disarray the travelers said, before collapsing of exhaustion the birds had headed east... the western woods begun to feel... alive!
Author's Notes: This is not one of my best... But I liked the fact that I had written a scary 'story'... plus "Summermay" is such a cool word!
