Olduvai Sister

Olduvai Sister
Deep beneath the earth,
You were protected
From the elemental forces
Of wind, and rain, and scouring sand.
Now, I come disturbing
Your ages-old entombment;
I brush away the shrouding earth,
And bring your tiny bones into the light.
Little One, there is a debt
I owe to all your kind;
A debt that stretches back in time
One-hundred-thousand years.
To you, who ran shrieking
When volcano spoke;
Who left your footprints in its dust;
Who survived, to bring my kind to birth.
Olduvai Sister, with skull so small
It nestles in my hand,
My children are the payment
Of the debt I owe to you.
