At Sea

A polluted pleasure in the frustration
Some innate need for suffering
Some relief with the guilt
Some justification in the pain
Need only a whisper of a memory to spark
An encouragement of the hopelessness
A reminder of the loneliness
A notion of rejection
Now the distractions stripped away
Bared to the ugly bones
Leaving only a skeleton with a broken heart
Pitiful and weak, really
Lost and confused in a sea of sorrow
Treading water in an ocean of tears
Waiting for the tide to drag me in
To a shore that I cannot see
Sharks circling at my feet
Waiting for my surrender to exhaustion
Do I martyr myself to their hunger?
Or hope they suffer like I do
With an unfulfilled need for
Something I cannot quite imagine
Wishing for a peace that
Surely only the dead could know
And darkness…
And suddenly I am on a boat
The water being pushed from my lungs
An explosion of bright light
A deep, painful intake of breath
Indistinct voices humming all around
A blink, a sliver of realization
And a blanket wrapped around my shoulders
Embroidered with the word “Hope”
