Pandora's Heart

You discovered Pandora’s box
When you decided to love me
You’ll have to pick so many locks
If you want to set me free
I really couldn’t blame you
If you thought it was too late
I’m afraid of what’s inside, too
And it’s my heart, for pity’s sake
My box is full of vileness
I pray you heed this warning
Opening it is not for the guileless
There’s a blackness always storming
You won’t find what you’re looking for
Of this I can assure you
You’ll always leave wanting more
In the end, they always do
I’ll always pull you near me
And beg you not to leave
And in the end you’ll fear me
All this you must believe
Despite all you choose to proceed?
Fine, set now upon your task
I hope you’re prepared to bleed
Please wait while I remove my mask
Am I not what you wanted?
Am I not who you thought?
Have I left you’re mind haunted?
Don’t like what you’ve bought?
That pretty bejeweled little box
Drew you to me like a spark
Like a trap set for the shrewd fox
Are you not afraid of the dark?
Oh now, don’t feel ashamed
It’s happened to so many
Your heart is who’s to blame
And you had warnings aplenty
You still wish to peek inside?
Don’t say I didn’t warn you
We all have our skeletons to hide
I’m sure even you have a few
So what’s in there, by the way?
I haven’t seen for myself in years
Always putting it off for another day
Because it always brings me to tears
Still haven’t seen enough yet?
Crawl on in for a better view
The box is pretty deep, I bet
Maybe just deep enough for you
Mind your fingers and your head
The box will now be closing
No, it’s not as if you’re dead
Your beating heart is only dozing
Do you understand now?
Have I made myself clear?
I’ve just begun to show you how
Paralyzed hearts feel no fear
Not unsettled by this numbness
I ‘ve become used to it somehow
Just as you will to all of this
You’ll be reaching that point by now
But wait…is that a thumping I feel?
A pounding in my box?
This wasn’t part of the deal
For you to unlock the locks!
Always an impossible mission
That no one else undertook
And led to much superstition
Always fell for line, sinker, and hook
You must be my antidote!
My fail-safe, my hidden key
The bridge across my murky moat
If only I could let you be
I’m scared…I want to run and hide
The sadness is catching up to me
By whose rules must I abide?
Unbound but never free?
You’re the one who unlocked the locks
And must answer the call
You’re the one found Pandora’s box
And thought you’d never fall
You caught me off guard, blind-sided
And tricked me into your web
And I don’t have the strength now to fight it
My tides rise, while yours ebb
I know now I must surrender
Like I never have before
And relinquish to love’s splendor
And let it bring me back to shore
Is Pandora’s box now empty?
Not yet, perhaps in time
A promise between you and me
I am yours, and you are mine
