Where Are You Christmas

Scattered leaves
Orange and gold
Winter winds
Days of old
Beauty stolen
Wise one fallen
Silence
Crisp white linens
Cradle death
Pseudo breath
The rise and fall
Hearts are breaking
Holidays forsaken
Abandoned
Trust scarred by untruth
The mind in disarray
Bells no longer chime
Til at last
The sun does shine
Slowly then the darkness healing
Sterile tubing erased by strings of lights
Plugs replaced by angels calling
Happiness returning
As silver streams are glistening
Joyeux Noel
Love dispelling pain
Family and friends
A gathering
Spices linger in the air
Greater days reborn
Christmas in all its blessed wonder
Peace and hope restored

Author's Notes: The song “Where are you Christmas” from Faith Hill always reminds me of when my mother passed just days after Thanksgiving. My brother was 19, I was 16 and both of us were responsible for a decision that no one at our age should have to make. I promised him I would not agree to removing my mom from the machines until he was able to better handle it. My father, with my wicked stepmother in tow, manipulated us to believe the other had changed their mind. My brother hated me for that and my father, the moment it was all over, abandoned us. I felt like I lost my mom and my brother that day. Any thought of Christmas was obliterated after that. There was nothing left, nothing that mattered. Eventually my mind pushed me to hang lights, garland, etc. So I did, and I found that the energy of the season overpowered the pain, ugly pictures scored in my brain were replaced and love of family and friends conquered all. So for anyone struggling during this time of year just remember, the hardest part is letting it in, but once you do, you’ll never let it go.
