Sestina of the Turning Wheel

by Oceana

Age Group: Adult

Spring had finally flown in driving the winter away
The Old Man had fought her right up to that day
Spring’s flowers were peeking their heads out to see
Even the blossoms were beginning to break out of the tree
Venturing forth from our winter shelter to worship the light
Taking in all we could; it was a glorious sight

Refreshing breezes blowing clean the way showing us all new sights
Sowing new plans for the future to help the young along the way
Persephone running through the fields playing in the dragons light
The dancing of the dragon making it hotter throughout the day
Persephone in the summer heat lies down beneath the tree
The dragon flies up in the sky heating all that we can see

The crops in the fields are growing tall blocking all we see
Taking care of the future letting things grow within our sight
The fruits swell and swell weighing down the great tree
Time to work to keep the fields making sure there is a way
Celebrations abound with bonfires at the end of each day
The old ones reading the coming future by the firelight

The Dragons flame begins to cool within the waning light
Jack of the Green runs through the fields and is cut down so all can see
The sun and moon share the sky towards the end of day
Demeter comes to bless our work all is well within her sight
As summer dances with Autumn bringing a chill along the way
The bright red fruit of our Mother is harvested from the tree

The bright greens of summer have been replaced upon the great tree
All know to enjoy the color that we see during the waning light
Gathering the feast from the great earth with friends along the way
Enjoying our fruits of labor leaving enough for the lady to see
Preparing for the coming cold when the first frost is in our sight
Celebrations abound with bonfires at the end of each day

The cold sets in more and more the Old Man visits one day
Demeter has lost her daughter she is no longer beneath the tree
Her weeping grows her heart to ice her tears are ice within our sight
The Old Man stays awake and steals the light
We step outside and all is white it’s quite a sight to see
We keep the fire always alight keeping the cold from our way

The wheel turns ever round within the light of the day and night
The great tree grows and bears fruit to show us the way
The sun and the moon within our sight is beautiful to see
