For What It's Worth

by SilverAngelFire
 Age Group: Adult

For What It’s Worth
Like tunnel vision I think at times The way adults see So oft one minded Caught in the burdening of life’s stresses Within these graying and stark realities We forget what truly matters We do not stop to smell the roses Or embrace the beauty of each petal We merely toss them to the side in haste Dismissing how much care is needed to see them grow
For what it’s worth I believe children are much the same With a need to be nurtured unconditionally Mentally, emotionally, physically They are our souls or piece of them anyway They cannot be pushed to the side Neglected or misused They are our wise men and women of the future Who will one day care for each of us So should we not listen to what they have to say Simply disregard their eccentricities Children are who we shape them to be
With all due respect Children see more Than we could ever hope to see They are our sanity and insanity All at the same time Our intelligence Our hopes Our dreams Our laughter Our eyes and ears Always ready to look and learn They see color in the blackest voids While we adults are too busy to even notice They can’t remember what they had for lunch yesterday But you can be sure They’ll remind you of the day Mom set the grill on fire
Like little sponges taking in all that life showers upon them I think it is we adults who take it all for granted Whether unintentionally or intentionally It is true none-the-less Some would say Children are only that Their minds equivalent That they cannot rationalize Or see right from wrong
Oh but they can and they do I do not believe they are all about amusement parks and cotton candy No, certainly not Though they may not always speak their mind They know many times what they want and need To experience life through their own eyes Without missing a beat And I believe whole-heartedly That deep within them Is voice just waiting to be set free

Author's Notes: So, I had asked my son a few months back if he would like to take a trip to Europe with me. He said yes, sure, whatever. When I told someone in my family they invited themselves along which is wonderful. All was good until they heard I would be taking my child with me and it would take me a bit more time to save up for the both of us. They immediately reminded me that children are nothing but children and why on earth would he want to go and why would I want to take him for my first time so far away and have to spend so much of my time looking after him. Well you know what, that’s my job! To look after him, nurture him and allow him to experience things for himself. Then I thought well maybe by his response he doesn’t really want to go.
Zach (my son) came home the other day and said, “look what I got Mom!” it’s a book about Paris. I said, “ok why?” “For when we go there!” lol. “Yes, but we’re going to England and Ireland, not Paris.” His little eyes turned so dim, “man, I got the wrong book” he said. They lit up though, as bright as the stars in the sky when I told him we would be taking a ferry to Ireland from England and all the other sites we would see in between. I knew at that moment there was absolutely no way I would leave my child behind no matter who bitches and moans about it!
