The Woman I Never Met

by Kyrja - Friend of Rupert
 [WVox Sponsor]
 Age Group: Adult

There is a woman who lives in this house with me, Although she isn’t someone I can touch or see.
She had a beautiful daughter not so long ago, A son, grandchildren, friends and people I’ll never know.
I’ve seen some of the things she use to call her own, I’ve paced the same floors and rooms and hallways she’s known.
There’s a pair of scissors I use now, and some other things of hers too, Should I throw all of these things away, even though they can still be used?
Let all of her precious or useful things rust and mold and rot? Perhaps sell, or give, or maybe even throw away the whole lot?
I’ve heard bits and pieces of the story of her life, Tales of her love and smiles she shared as a young wife.
I’ve listened to the stories of her good days and a few of the bad, Of the goals she reached, the trips she took, the wonderful times she had.
The man who loved her through so much of his life, loves her still, It warms my heart to know, throughout all time, he always will.
There are those who move now, in and out of my days, Who miss this woman and her tender, loving ways.
She was there for them, with a shoulder, a hand, and a wise word or two, She was funny and smart and always, always knew how and what to do.
Some of them, in their misery, cry and scream and raise a fuss, “Go away!” they cry silently, “You’ll never be one of us!”
I hold my tongue, I sigh, and I shake my weary head, I know full well some wish I would go away instead.
There is a woman who lives in this house with me, Although she isn’t someone I can touch or see.
There are those who believe once we leave this life, there isn’t any more, There are those who believe there’s a pearly gate that leads to something more.
But snow-white wings, endless bliss, and darkness aren’t part of my own reality, I waltz and skip and twirl my way around the Spiral Dance learning to be free.
I hope, for this woman I’ve never met, in this one thing I might be right, Knowing how much she was loved, surely her new life is beautiful and bright.
There are many things about this house I’ve changed she’ll never see, Everything’s been moved and rearranged in order to suit me.
And, of course, I’ll never know if some of the things we do are the same, Although I encourage the man who loved her to freely speak her name.
For he loves me now, he who once lovingly caressed the other woman’s face, For me, myself, for who I am, my own self; in his heart I have my own place.
I don’t replace her, the woman who lives in this house with me, We share him now, though she isn’t someone I can touch or see.
Stay if you will, go when you’re ready, but I hope one day you’ll be free, And perhaps, just maybe, they’ll learn they don’t lose you by accepting me.
