Inside Looking Out

Inside Looking Out
It is a glorious moment I believe
When acceptance carries you far beyond the sea
And you realize that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be
I’m on the inside looking out or so it would seem
From this magnificent haven I have been granted
The pride I feel slowly building like the tide
Til each soft sweet ripple washes over me
To say that I am anything less than captivated would be a lie
The smile on my face a complete give away
As I sit and watch and hear and see
The heartfelt meanderings of true friends and family
Instead of those built merely on pre-recorded history
Too though I feel at times abandoned
Caught somewhere between the shadows and light
When the currents change and I find myself alone
Forced to the outside and looking in
Like a mongrel shivering in the snow
Consumed by an onslaught of self admission
As I am faced with a world in which I do not belong
One in which I would never dream to encroach upon
That is certainly not my way
Yet I imagine there are things I could do or say
But cannot
Aside from a few albeit generic but sincere comments
And maybe one or two gentle jabs
I cannot speak those words to you
Simply out of respect
And the fear of dredging up painful memories
Though I won’t say that it doesn’t sadden me deeply
That I don’t think about it everyday
I think at times maybe I should just walk away
Disconnect myself and just journey blindly
I don’t know
I am without a doubt out of my comfort zone
Still it matters not
For it is to that soft voice of reason asking me to stay
That I just don’t know how to say no
And just like that this all encompassing smile returns
Just like that
Hmmm, I wonder at what point I lost that control
