Beauty Believed

Beauty Believed
Her cloak billowing on the breeze
She stood there in the meadow
In what seemed to be the center of the Universe
Fair face tilted towards the heavens
Arms outstretched
The sweet smell of the chilled autumn air filling her senses
And then, a soft song uttered forth from her lips
And she began to spin…
The birds began to encircle her
Seeming to spin along
Entranced by her flowing hair
A small rumble of thunder
The clouds parted
Still spinning, a deep breath
And her feet lifted from the Earth
Eyes closed, she sang louder
Her voice as pure as any bird’s song
Higher from the ground, inch by inch
Oblivious to anything but her spinning
That slow, easy spin
Her cloak dancing in the wind
He watched her from the edge of the forest
Entranced as the birds
And it was at that moment that he knew
That which had been taught to him as evil
Was not evil at all
But more beautiful, more pure, more real
Than anything he had ever known
She was one and the same
With the birds
With Nature
With the Universe
Complete and whole
At peace with herself
And all that was
And was ever to be
And this to him was more beautiful
Than any pretty maid’s face
Any courtly gown, any rouged lip
Or sculpted cheek
More beautiful than the scent of Jasmine
Blooming in the moonlight
Or the twinkling of the Northern Star
Eyes wide, breath held deeply
He wanted to call out to her
But his voice choked in his throat
Instead, he stood and admired from afar
That which he had not believed existed
That Witch he had not believed existed
And once again, a roll of thunder
And slowly she drifted to Earth
As the autumn leaves of brown and gold
Feet landing upon the lush green of the meadow
Deliberately, and without the slightest question in her eyes
She turned, a sweet and knowing smile on her lips
And whispered, “And now do you believe?”
