Down the Well
Age Group: Adult
I was holding on so tightly to the edge
The stones tearing flesh from fingertip
Bare knees scraping the walls
I know I will fall
And then, I just let go…
Fighting for something to hold on to
But that well was so deep
And the bottom was so far down
And all the while, I was looking up
Trying to focus on the light
And I then I hit water at the bottom of the well
-Well of Fear
-Well of Shame
-Well of Anger
-Well of Guilt
Try to hold my breath as I go under
All the while, panicking
All consumed, all encompassed
And it seems like forever
Somehow I emerge from that dark, cold, rancid water
A gasp for breath, that sweet, deep intake of oxygen
And there is still that light above
And a reason to crawl out of that deep, cold well
Out of the all-consuming darkness
So I reach for the stones on the sides
Find that small nitch for my fingers
Gripping, grappling, pulling
Find a crook for my toes
Breathe, breathe, breathe…
Almost there, eyes up to avoid what’s below
Still that glorious light
Warmth on my face, so near the top
My hands reach the edges of those rough stones
That once ripped flesh from fingertip
Climbing over the edge and out of the well
I am free, and still that light…
