A Tower In the Storm

by Shawnee
 Age Group: Adult

“Yes, I know, ” she said to him “My heart is bound with string… I’ve seen too much of this kingdom, But seen nothing of it’s king.”
“Together, yet alone we sit With eager ears I await Until the candles must be relit And the hours turn too late.”
“Still nothing does he tell me Of feelings or of thoughts I’m weary wishing what will never be This battle is too long fought.”
“Freedom is what I yearn for, Though this is out of hand. He has locked and barred the door. On the other side, a guard stands.”
“Why he’s kept me is a mystery. Now my spring has turned to fall. My youthfulness is history, Kept at his beck and call.”
“So at this window I do sit Yearning for what will not be. My key to his heart does not fit. Perhaps, a gift never meant for me.”
“If this is what Fate had in mind, I trust there is a reason. I do not know whether cruel or kind, But I surely will be tried for this treason!”
“I refuse to stay here evermore!” She cried and clung to him “These walls leak when the rains pour And I will drown within them!”
“My lady, your cries do echo to me But your hero or savior I am not, ” He said to her as he glanced towards the sea And wished his heart was more than rot
“But, day by day you’ve come to me And your words are whispered sweet! And your promises on bent knee? My soul shudders when our eyes meet!”
He turned from her now, quietly He must leave her and he knew Trapped within her web, held mightily Too long he stared in her eyes blue
“You thought it was me you’ve wanted But all along I knew too well… I would leave you with a heart haunted And create for you an earthly hell.”
“It’s never been me you so much need, For the king’s prisoner you are not. And this once realized, you would be freed And have the peace you’ve so long sought”
She put her hand up to her brow For this she would not believe That within her grasp for so long now Had been her soul’s reprieve
“And you?” she asked him boldly “A part of this illusion too?” He looked at her, now coldly And she knew it must be true
“Just close your eyes, my caged bird” He said to her in his lulled voice “Remember all that you have heard And know you have always had a choice.”
Then gone he was from the cold room His footprints still shown on the floor She decided now to face her doom She turned and reached for the door
The lock she had never tried before For her fear had been too great Her hands shook as she felt the door Another moment she could not wait
At first she thought she felt resistance And fought the urge to retreat She followed her soul’s persistence And would not give in to defeat
And suddenly the door was open No guard stood at the other side And after all the years of hoping, She found the passageways wide
An expanse stretched on either side The direction to take was not clear Then she knew she must decide And make her choice without fear
The way she chose is a mystery A story she’ll finish, in time And her past will remain history No more guilt for imagined crimes…
