The Mystery

This Universe is a snail
Endlessly crawling the rim of a donut.
Or it could be a breath of air
Trapped in the lungs of a mermaid.
Certainly it is a bottomless dark ocean
And the stars are its foam.
(Science tells us that much.)
But perhaps it is also a snowflake
Melting on the tongue of a bear,
Or the skin of an apple peeled
By the fingernail of a virgin.
Really, it is whatever you will.
Because Will is the stem of Desire.
And although I can begin to tell you everything,
Sadly--or not--I can tell you nothing.
